Energy North’s Project Ares and Beetaloo Energy’s Beetaloo Digital initiative have driven a rapid push to build gas‑powered hyperscale data centres in the Northern Territory. Energy North’s proposal for a 90‑hectare site at Murranji Station includes a 1,038 MW gas‑fired plant with solar support, a workforce village, and a 2 km airstrip. Beetaloo Energy has launched Beetaloo Digital, securing exclusive rights to a 185‑hectare parcel at Weddell for AI‑focused campuses that could consume up to 200 TJ of gas per day and generate up to 2 GW of on‑site power. In late July, Beetaloo Energy signed a non‑binding memorandum of understanding with Halliburton, valued at approximately US$26 billion (A$37 billion), to create a vertically integrated supply chain. In August 2026, Formentera Partners and Daly Waters Energy announced the commencement of natural gas commissioning at the Sturt Plateau Compression Facility (SPCF) in the Beetaloo Basin. A 50/50 joint venture between Daly Waters Energy and Tamboran Resources Corporation, the SPCF has a nameplate capacity of 48.5 MMcf/d. Under a take-or-pay agreement lasting up to 15 years, 38.8 MMcf/d is contracted to the Northern Territory Government. The US$99 million project was completed on schedule, with five wells currently tied back to the plant. By September 2026, gas production officially commenced in the Beetaloo Basin, an onshore reserve estimated by the Northern Territory government to hold 430 trillion cubic feet of gas.
