Northern Territory gas‑driven hyperscale data centre plans
Overview
Energy North’s Project Ares and Beetaloo Energy’s Beetaloo Digital initiative have driven a rapid push to build gas‑powered hyperscale data centres in the Northern Territory. Energy North’s proposal for a 90‑hectare site at Murranji Station includes a 1,038 MW gas‑fired plant with solar support, while the government granted Beetaloo exclusive rights to a 185‑hectare parcel at Weddell for one or two AI‑focused campuses that could consume up to 200 TJ of gas per day and generate up to 2 GW of on‑site power.
In late July, Beetaloo Energy signed a non‑binding memorandum of understanding with Halliburton. The partnership will provide subsurface consulting, field‑development planning, drilling services and modular gas‑fired power solutions for the Beetaloo Digital hub, creating a vertically integrated supply chain from upstream gas extraction in the Beetaloo Basin to electricity generation for the data‑centre complex. Valued at about US$26 billion (A$37 billion), the deal aims to deliver baseload power independent of the NT grid and support rapid AI‑infrastructure growth across the Asia‑Pacific.
Environmental groups continue to warn that the projects could double the Territory’s gas capacity and increase emissions, while government officials stress the potential for a durable domestic gas market, economic benefits and the possibility of exporting surplus power to the Darwin‑Katherine grid.
