Northern Vietnam heavy rain persists

Entities: Vietnam National Hydro‑Meteorological Service · Hanoi Drainage Company (Thoát nước Hà Nội) · Northern Vietnam · National Center for Hydro‑Meteorological Forecasting (Vietnam) · Hanoi Drainage Company

Overview

Since late June, authorities have warned of sustained heavy rain across northern Vietnam, with a major storm on 29 July delivering up to 70 mm of rain and causing localized street flooding in Hanoi. City drainage pumps operated at near‑full capacity, clearing water within hours and restoring traffic by early morning. The storm flooded streets such as Cổ Linh, 42 Giang Văn Minh, Trần Quốc Toàn and Thụy Khuê, and pump stations deployed multiple units to bring water levels down by about 6:30 a.m.

Forecasts from the National Center for Hydro‑Meteorology project continued rain through early August, with scattered thunderstorms, occasional heavy downpours and isolated totals exceeding 150 mm. Expected temperatures range from 31 °C to 34 °C, with gusty winds, hail and lightning possible. Authorities maintain warnings for flash‑flood risks in low‑lying urban and industrial areas, advise residents to carry rain gear, avoid standing under large trees or fragile structures, and continue to monitor for landslides and strong gusts across the region.
