Northwestern Mexico water situation

Overview

In late July 2026, northwestern Mexico faced severe drought conditions. Reservoirs in Sinaloa were at roughly 26 % of capacity and groundwater tables remained low, forcing about 30 rural communities to rely on water trucks. In Sonora, the Ignacio R. Alatorre dam held only about 4 % of its storage, insufficient for basic irrigation, prompting officials to monitor the situation and hope for monsoon rains.

A few days later, the same region reported an unprecedented inflow to its northern reservoir system, the highest in a decade. The three northern dams in Sinaloa approached 2 billion cubic metres, about 30 % of total capacity, offering a markedly better outlook for agriculture. Authorities expect continued rainfall through the coming months, which could further improve water availability and reduce irrigation needs.
