Norway electric mobility and machinery transition
Overview
Norway is experiencing a broad transition toward electrification across the passenger, heavy transport, and construction sectors. In the construction industry, battery-powered machinery is demonstrating performance comparable to diesel models in heavy-duty tunnel projects. Following successful tests on the E6 and E134 highways, agencies are considering stricter requirements for electric operation, supported by increased subsidies from Enova to offset the extra costs of choosing electric over diesel.
In the transport sector, electric vehicle adoption remains high. By the end of 2025, approximately 95.9 percent of all new passenger car registrations were fully electric. The heavy transport sector is also expanding, with the number of electric trucks on Norwegian roads growing from 37 in 2020 to 3,535 in 2026. To facilitate this, Enova has allocated approximately 400 million NOK in support for electric trucks, though funding caps for 2026 have led to a temporary pause in support allocations.
