Norway electricity price risk amid low reservoir levels

Overview

By late August 2026, the risk of rising electricity prices in Norway persisted due to critically low reservoir levels in Southern and Central regions. Following a warm, dry summer, water filling levels reached their lowest point in two decades.

Energy analyst Ola Kristian Taraldrud from Vibb noted that more than normal precipitation is required this autumn to replenish these levels. Because of Norway’s heavy reliance on hydroelectric power, these low water levels are expected to drive up spot prices.

In addition to domestic water scarcity, international volatility is compounding the risk. Instability in the Middle East and potential disruptions to gas transport through the Hormuz Strait are impacting oil and gas prices, which in turn affects electricity costs across Europe and Southern Norway.
