Notorious B.I.G. estate legal dispute

Overview

A legal dispute regarding the estate of the rapper Notorious B.I.G. has seen a significant ruling in a Delaware Chancery Court. Judge Kathaleen St. J. McCormick ruled in favor of producer Wayne Barrow, determining that a trust controlled by Barrow—which holds assets from the rapper’s late mother, Voletta Wallace—is a legitimate member of the LLC that co-owns the music catalog and likeness rights.

The ruling prevents the rapper’s widow, Faith Evans, from excluding Barrow and the Wallace estate from the proceeds of a deal with Primary Wave Music, which is valued at approximately $100 million. While Evans had argued that company bylaws required her consent for such transfers, the court determined the trustee was entitled to the rights and obligations held by Wallace under the operating agreement.

Under the terms of Wallace’s will, Barrow is set to distribute her share of the Primary Wave proceeds to the Christopher Wallace Memorial Foundation. The remaining proceeds are to be split among Evans and the rapper’s two children, CJ and Ty’anna Wallace. A separate legal challenge filed by CJ Wallace in Pennsylvania regarding Barrow’s authority as executor remains pending.
