Nova Iguaçu infrastructure recovery
Entities: Light · Nova Iguaçu (municipality) · Municipal Education Secretariat (Semed) · Municipal Education Department (Semed) · Light (electric utility)
Overview
In late July 2026 the municipality of Nova Iguaçu began a targeted repair of a damaged sewage network on Travessa Leopoldo after a retaining‑wall construction for the Rodovia Presidente Dutra duplication punctured a manhole and caused sewage back‑flow. The local development agency CODENI coordinated with the road concessionaire Ecovias Rio Minas to replace the affected manholes and restore normal sewage service for residents.
A few days later, on 29 July, a strong windstorm hit the city, toppling trees and damaging roofs, walls, utility poles and other infrastructure. The municipal government activated an emergency task‑force that cleared more than 180 fallen trees, repaired damaged public facilities, and worked to restore health, education and electricity services. By early August most hospitals were operating, many schools had resumed classes, and officials expected full service restoration within days.
By 1 August the task‑force had restored most health facilities—including the General Hospital, Iguassú Maternity Hospital and five UPAs—though vaccination remained suspended at 15 units. Educational recovery progressed, with 89 of 152 schools reopening for full‑day classes, eight operating only to provide meals, and 55 still closed pending inspections and electricity restoration. Mayor Dudu Reina urged the electricity provider Light to accelerate power restoration and projected that most services would be fully normalised by early August.
