Novi Sad Faculty of Philosophy student unrest

The Faculty of Philosophy in Novi Sad is experiencing ongoing tensions regarding student representation and university autonomy. Following a police raid on August 26, 2025, where students conducting a blockade were forcibly removed using shock bombs, the faculty has faced significant fallout. The incident resulted in injuries and the dismissal of two professors, Jelena Kleut and Vladimir Mihić. Legal experts have criticized the lack of consequences for the raid, suggesting the intervention was driven by political agreements rather than independent academic decisions.

In August 2026, one year after the raid, students and professors held commemorative events, such as the forum ‘Occupied, but not silenced’, to protest the erosion of academic freedom. Amidst these tensions, elections for the student parliament of the Faculty of Philosophy and the University of Novi Sad have been announced. The organization GLAS is currently seeking signatures to support a list of students in blockade for the upcoming faculty elections scheduled for September 14.
