Novo Nordisk AI drug discovery partnerships

Novo Nordisk has initiated several strategic partnerships to integrate artificial intelligence into its drug discovery and research workflows.

In late August 2026, the company partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to utilize cloud technologies and agentic AI. This collaboration includes establishing a co-innovation hub in London to shorten the timeline from drug target identification to human administration. Novo Nordisk designated AWS as its preferred cloud provider, intending to use tools like Amazon Bedrock to integrate genomic and clinical data.

In September 2026, Novo Nordisk expanded its AI capabilities by partnering with Anthropic. The company plans to test the Claude Science model to address scientific questions, propose drug candidates, and evaluate biological connections. Beyond scientific reasoning, Novo intends to use Claude for AI-assisted software engineering, though the company stated that all AI applications will be conducted “under human supervision.”

As part of this collaboration, Anthropic has begun operating a biological laboratory in the San Francisco Bay Area. Eric Kauderer-Abrams, who leads natural sciences at Anthropic, stated that the company believes “real laboratory work remains the ultimate test in biology.” While a spokesperson noted the lab is not exclusively focused on drug discovery, the move signals Anthropic’s expansion into the biotechnology sector to address medical needs.

The collaboration aims to support biological reasoning and address specific scientific challenges identified by researchers, as part of a broader goal to become the world’s most AI-driven healthcare company. This initiative follows previous AI-focused collaborations with OpenAI and AWS, as well as the establishment of an AI innovation center in collaboration with Nvidia and the Danish Export and Investment Fund (EIFO).
