NSFAS 2027 student funding application process

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has opened the application window for the 2027 academic year. The process began on 18 September 2026 and is set to close on 31 October 2026, with funding outcomes expected in December.

To qualify, applicants must meet specific gross household income thresholds: total income must not exceed R350,000, or R600,000 for persons with disabilities. Eligibility is verified through digital platforms where students submit documentation such as salary slips, bank statements, and tax returns. Recipients of certain SASSA grants may be automatically deemed eligible.

To streamline the process, new measures have been introduced, including automated document verification, electronic signing, and direct data extraction from institutional systems. NSFAS is also cooperating with the Department of Home Affairs to verify identity, registration, and banking details.

Officials have issued warnings regarding misinformation and fraud. Students are cautioned against unverified social media claims regarding registration and funding terms, which may be used for phishing attempts. NSFAS emphasizes that applications are free of charge and advises applicants not to share sensitive information like passwords and one-time PINs.

As of 23 September 2026, NSFAS spokesperson Ishmael Mnisi has cautioned students that simply uploading documents is insufficient and that applicants must ensure they click ‘submit’ to complete the process.

The scheme is currently facing significant financial challenges. The National Treasury has previously identified a funding shortfall of approximately R15 billion, a deficit that could potentially reach R33 billion by 2029. NSFAS has raised these concerns with the Department of Higher Education and Training, noting that policy changes regarding funding fall under the department's responsibility.
