NSW Mater Hospital public-private partnership inquiry
Overview
A parliamentary inquiry into the Calvary Mater Hospital in New South Wales has recommended ending the facility’s public-private partnership (PPP). Chaired by Amanda Cohn, the inquiry reported allegations of corruption, maintenance neglect, and the deliberate falsification of mould-testing records. Whistleblower Luke Carroll testified that infrastructure issues had been known for years, though the private operator Novacare and subcontractor Honeywell have denied these claims.
Following reports of elevated levels of aspergillus fumigatus mould in the hospital’s intensive care unit, NSW Health Minister Ryan Park announced that the state government is seeking legal advice regarding the PPP. While the government is exploring options to buy back the hospital, Minister Park stated that the state must avoid creating massive liabilities for taxpayers. The government is currently reviewing complex contractual arrangements and intends to establish a pathway through the cabinet and Executive Review Committee.
