NUC academic programme expansions in Nigeria

Overview

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has been conducting resource verification and approval processes for new academic programmes across various Nigerian institutions.

In early September, the NUC performed verification exercises for Sokoto State University, which sought approval for 24 undergraduate programmes in fields such as Health Sciences, Computing, and Engineering. Additionally, Achievers University underwent assessment for seven new postgraduate programmes, including Law and various Engineering disciplines. Vice-Chancellor Professor Omolola O. Irinoye stated that the NUC’s quality-assurance framework is “essential for maintaining the credibility of Nigerian higher education.”

By late September, the NUC approved 30 new programmes for the Federal University Dutse in Jigawa State, effective from the 2026/2027 academic session. These approved offerings include the establishment of a new Faculty of Law and diverse courses in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, and Health Sciences, as well as various postgraduate diplomas and doctoral programmes.
