Nvidia Spectrum-X networking technology development
Overview
Nvidia has expanded its networking capabilities for AI infrastructure through the introduction and mass production of new Spectrum-X technologies.
Initially, the company announced the Spectrum-6 switch, part of the Vera Rubin AI architecture. This switch is designed to interconnect millions of GPUs for gigascale AI factories, offering 102.4 terabits per second capacity while aiming to reduce power and operating costs. Early adopters include Microsoft, Tesla, and SpaceX AI.
Following this, Nvidia moved into mass production of its Spectrum-X Ethernet Photonics switch system. This represents the first mass-produced 200G/lane Co-Packaged Optics (CPO) Ethernet switch. By utilizing silicon photonics to integrate optical engines directly with the switching ASIC, the technology aims to improve power efficiency fivefold and increase the mean time between failures by ten times compared to traditional modules. Production involves a global supply chain including TSMC, Foxconn, and Lumentum, with customers such as Oracle and Lambda integrating the technology.
