NYSE tokenized securities platform development

Overview

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and its parent company, Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), are developing a blockchain-based infrastructure for the onchain settlement of tokenized securities. The proposed platform aims to integrate the NYSE’s Pillar matching engine with blockchain-based post-trade systems to enable 24/7 trading, instant atomic settlement, and fractional shares.

Following initial reports of the project and a memorandum of understanding with Securitize, ICE has entered into a collaboration with tZERO Group. Under this agreement, tZERO will act as a design partner for the digital transfer-agent and broker-dealer systems. As part of the partnership, ICE will invest in tZERO’s financing round to secure a license to its blockchain patent portfolio, which includes 103 patents related to smart-contract frameworks and compliance-aware transfer logic.

This partnership establishes a multi-vendor strategy for ICE, following the earlier appointment of Securitize as a digital transfer agent. The companies also intend to evaluate whether tZERO’s tokenized assets could be utilized as collateral within ICE clearing houses. The initiative seeks to transition security ownership records from legacy settlement rails to blockchain technology, though the platform launch remains subject to regulatory approvals, technical requirements, and operational standards.
