Nézőpont Intézet methodological restructuring

Overview

The Hungarian polling institute Nézőpont Intézet is undergoing a methodological restructuring following its failure to accurately predict election results.

Institute head Ágoston Sámuel Mráz previously explained that while earlier surveys indicated a six percent lead for Fidesz, a rapid shift in public sentiment toward the Tisza Party occurred in the final weeks of the campaign. Mráz admitted that relying on local surveys conducted months in advance was a “professional error,” as both national and district-level moods changed unexpectedly despite the use of weighted, representative samples.

Following the 2026 Hungarian elections, Mráz issued a further apology, admitting the institute’s data failed to capture the scale of the shift. He noted that in the final days of the campaign, researchers “did not even believe our own data.” The institute identified specific failures in calculating voter turnout, specifically underestimating the activity of young Tisza supporters while overestimating the turnout of lower-educated Fidesz voters.

In response to these errors, the institute is moving away from primarily publishing party preference data to focus on research-based analyses of societal connections. The organization is also launching a policy think tank, ‘Magyarország 2040’ (Hungary 2040), to study long-term trends, and has pledged to increase transparency regarding its data collection processes and methodology. The institute is also reviewing its operations to prioritize in-depth analysis over frequent public appearances.
