Oaxaca hydrocarbon spill protests
Overview
In late July 2026 a hydrocarbon spill contaminated four beaches in Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, affecting about 12 km of shoreline, nearby lagoons and dunes. Municipal authorities activated a coordination committee under the National Contingency Plan and the Mexican Navy began cleanup operations. The municipality’s ecology director noted a history of frequent spills, and the mayor filed a complaint with the Agency for Security, Energy and Environment (ASEA). Local fishermen and salt‑production cooperatives convened, demanding direct talks with Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) and a temporary employment program to assist with the cleanup.
A week later, on 7 August, residents and fishermen from the nearby Playa Chipehua blocked the Huatulco‑Salina Cruz highway. They called on Pemex to send representatives to assess the source and extent of hydrocarbon residues that threaten marine ecosystems, fishing livelihoods and tourism. The protest echoed earlier spill reports along the Salina Cruz coast and reinforced pressure on authorities to act swiftly to protect the environment and local economies.
