Offshore yuan and Hong Kong dollar bond market growth

Overview

The issuance of offshore yuan and Hong Kong dollar bonds has experienced significant growth. In the first half of the year, Hong Kong dollar bond issuance rose 84.4% year-on-year, while ‘dim sum bonds’ increased by 69.1% to reach a semi-annual high. This trend is attributed to high US interest rates and increased participation from mainland Chinese non-bank financial institutions following the expansion of the Bond Connect program.

Building on this regional momentum, the Shenzhen Municipal People's Government issued 1 billion yuan in offshore RMB local government bonds in Macao. These three-year bonds, issued at an interest rate of 1.41%, represent Shenzhen’s first issuance of Greater Bay Area-themed sustainable development bonds in the region. The proceeds are designated for medical health and water governance projects, further integrating financial cooperation within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
