In the first leg of the Copa Libertadores round of 16, Platense and Coquimbo Unido played to a 1-1 draw at the Ciudad de Vicente López stadium in Argentina. Luciano Giménez scored for Platense in the 35th minute following a cross from Juan Ignacio Saborido. Coquimbo Unido secured an equalizer through Guido Vadalá during stoppage time (93rd minute). Coquimbo goalkeeper Diego Sánchez prevented Platense from taking a larger lead by saving both an initial penalty shot and the subsequent rebound in the 82nd minute. While Platense dominated much of the match, they missed a penalty from Guido Mainero. The result leaves the series tied heading into the second leg on August 19 at the Francisco Sánchez Rumoroso stadium in Chile. A Coquimbo Unido victory would allow them to advance directly and secure a US$1.7 million prize from Conmebol, while another draw would lead to a penalty shootout. Following the match, TNT Sports journalist Constanza Solar reported being physically assaulted outside the stadium. Solar stated on social media that she was recognized as Chilean and kicked by a supporter, noting, ‘I took a kick. A fan recognized me as Chilean and hit me. My leg hurts a lot.’ Additionally, Coquimbo Unido player Alejandro Camargo raised concerns regarding the conduct of the Platense delegation, alleging that the team lacked hot water in their facilities.
