On the night of 23 July a child in the residence placed a 9‑1‑1 call; dispatchers heard screaming and a loud bang before the call cut off. Police arrived to find both Gilson and Duffey dead. The couple’s son later told investigators that his stepfather had shot his mother.

Investigators noted that Duffey was already under investigation for the same allegations at the time of the shooting. The incident drew national and international attention because the TikTok video had amassed millions of views and highlighted the intersection of domestic violence, online accusations, and jurisdictional complexities on tribal land.

Gilson, 43, is survived by two children. Authorities continue to investigate the homicide‑suicide, emphasizing concerns over how public online disclosures can intensify personal conflicts.
