Omoyele Sowore human rights and political disputes

Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has been involved in several legal and political disputes in Nigeria. In early August, Sowore condemned a traditional ritual performed on a TikTok creator, describing it as an “abuse of human dignity.” During this period, he also criticized the rapid advancement of a proposed state police bill, arguing it should be postponed until after the 2027 general elections to prevent electoral interference. Additionally, his defamation trial involving the Department of State Services (DSS) faced delays due to disputes over court documents.

By late August, Sowore shifted his criticism toward the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). He challenged the agency’s decision to remand a university student, Maryam Isa Shehu, on cyberbullying charges. Sowore argued that the EFCC is exceeding its mandate by using its authority to prosecute citizens for social media activity and public criticism.

In late August, Sowore, acting as the presidential candidate for the African Action Congress (AAC), expanded his criticism to include political alignments and election-related violence. He alleged that a meeting between Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke and President Bola Tinubu signaled a political agreement ahead of the 2027 elections. Sowore further claimed that nearly 50 citizens were killed in connection with the August 15 governorship election in Osun State. He also criticized singer Davido for meeting with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, characterizing the interaction as “political opportunism” amidst reported electoral violence.
