Online fraud trends in Bulgaria

Overview

Bulgaria has seen a rise in various forms of digital and financial deception. Initially, legal experts warned of “Task Scams,” where fraudulent actors promise high daily wages for simple online tasks, such as liking brand pages. These schemes build trust through small initial payments before requiring victims to deposit their own funds to “unlock levels” or pay for “taxes” and “guarantees” to withdraw earnings.

Subsequently, the Bulgarian Commission for Consumer Protection (CCP) reported an increase in online shopping fraud. This includes fake social media advertisements, non-delivery of goods, and misleading offers for medical products like dental veneers. These scams often target vulnerable populations, including the elderly and people with special needs, using fraudulent lotteries and promises of easy profits to collect personal information, credit card details, and PIN codes.
