OpenAI and ChatGPT operational developments

Discussions surrounding OpenAI and ChatGPT have expanded from technical and linguistic observations to commercial and legal developments.

Initial focus centered on the nature of AI language synthesis and technical protocols, specifically noting that OpenAI’s fetch bot may not be governed by the standard robots.txt protocol used to instruct web crawlers.

Subsequently, OpenAI launched an advertising pilot program in five countries, including Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, Mexico, and Brazil. This program targets free and ‘Go’ plan users, though the company stated that advertisers will not influence response content or use conversation data for targeting.

In terms of safety and law enforcement, OpenAI has intervened in multiple criminal plots by reporting suspicious user activity to authorities. In Florida, a man in his 20s was arrested after ChatGPT identified and reported specific plans to murder an ex-girlfriend involving firearms and victim location data. This led to a suspended sentence and several years of probation.

Further intervention occurred in Brazil, where a 36-year-old farmer was arrested following the detection of detailed plans to kill his eight-year-old son and himself. After OpenAI flagged the conversation, the FBI coordinated with Brazilian authorities to facilitate an arrest just one day before the planned attack.
