Opening of South Korea National Sports Museum
Overview
South Korea has officially opened the National Sports Museum in Seoul’s Olympic Park. Established by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation, the facility is the nation’s first national museum dedicated exclusively to sport.
The museum houses approximately 70,000 items, including historic medals, equipment, uniforms, and Olympic memorabilia. Notable exhibits include Suh Yun-bok’s 1947 Boston Marathon winner’s medal, football boots from pioneer Kim Yong-sik, and the competition uniform of South Korea’s first Olympic gold medallist, Yang Jung-mo. It also features artifacts from the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games, such as the Olympic torch.
Spanning six levels, the facility includes permanent galleries, a special exhibition space, a café, and a rooftop garden. Additionally, the existing Seoul Olympic Museum has been renovated to include a children’s museum, a specialist sports library, and various educational spaces.
