Conflicting data on Windows and MacOS malware threats

Cybersecurity studies continue to present conflicting data regarding the relative safety of Windows and MacOS operating systems.

A Surfshark analysis of over 390,000 malware incidents between January and July 2026 found that Windows systems were approximately six times more likely to be affected by malicious software than MacOS. While Windows users comprised 66 percent of the studied base, they accounted for 92 percent of threats. The report noted that Trojan malware was particularly prevalent, accounting for 46 percent of detected threats on Windows.

Conversely, research from Kaspersky suggests that MacOS users may face higher rates of specific cyber threats. This data indicates that approximately 12 percent of MacOS users reported malware infections, compared to 9 percent of Windows users. MacOS users showed higher susceptibility to phishing (12 percent vs 9 percent), investment scams (16 percent vs 13 percent), and personal data theft (12 percent vs 7 percent).

Experts attribute these differing trends to market share and user behavior. While the widespread use of Windows makes it a primary target for existing hacking tools, the growing presence of Apple devices in home and corporate sectors has increased their profitability for criminals. Additionally, a sense of false security may impact MacOS users; only 51 percent of Mac users reportedly avoid suspicious links, compared to 62 percent of PC users, and only 35 percent of Mac owners install specific security tools, compared to 42 percent of Windows users.
