Operation Tidal Wave cruise ship crew arrests

Overview

As part of a law enforcement initiative called ‘Operation Tidal Wave’, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Homeland Security agents arrested 11 foreign crewmembers aboard two cruise ships docked in Boston: Holland America’s Volendam and Norwegian Cruise Line’s Breakaway.

The operation, conducted between August 14 and August 16, targeted individuals suspected of possessing and distributing child sexual abuse and exploitation materials. The suspects include nine citizens of the Philippines, one from Indonesia, and one from Nicaragua. Following searches of their living quarters and electronic devices, the individuals were processed for deportation under the Immigration and Nationality Act.

Holland America Line reported the immediate termination of the involved employees, while Norwegian Cruise Line stated it is cooperating with the investigation. This action follows a previous phase of the same operation earlier this year, which resulted in the arrest of 41 crew members across nine ships in San Diego and Puerto Rico.
