Orca interactions with vessels in Spain

Overview

A series of encounters involving orcas attacking sailboats has been reported off the coast of Spain. In the Vigo estuary, a group of orcas led by a matriarch known as ‘Abuela Toñi’ caused significant damage to a vessel’s rudder. Researchers noted the matriarch appeared to have nine bullet wounds in her fin, though they suggested these interactions may be attempts at engagement rather than intentional harm.

In a subsequent incident, a pod of three to four killer whales attacked a sailboat belonging to team Seika Racing while it was being moved from San Vicente. Crew member Gage Butler reported that the encounter lasted approximately eight minutes and resulted in the loss of half of the boat’s rudder, describing the event as both “terrifying and fascinating.”
