Organized crime linked to illegal logging in Mexico

Overview

In the State of Mexico, illegal logging has reportedly become an activity linked to organized crime networks. PVEM deputy Vanessa Linares Zetina has called for an integral strategy to target not only those felling trees but also the financiers and coordinators of these operations.

Linares Zetina reported that individuals suspected of environmental crimes have been identified through meetings with the State of Mexico Attorney General’s Office. Concerns have been raised that criminal groups may be receiving advance information regarding law enforcement operations, allowing them to evade authorities. The issue is notably visible in areas such as Nevado de Toluca and the Chichinautzin biological corridor, affecting approximately 25 municipalities.
