Orthodox Christian religious observances

Overview

Orthodox Christian communities are observing several significant religious feast days and traditions during the autumn period.

In late September, the Church celebrates the Conception of Saint John the Baptist, commemorating the biblical account of the Archangel Gabriel announcing the pregnancy of Elizabeth to Zechariah. This observance also honors the martyr Irene of Alexandria.

By October, observances expand to include the feast of the Prophet Jonah, which focuses on themes of repentance. In Serbian tradition, the month is marked by ‘Slava’, or family patron saint days, featuring seven major feasts such as Miholjdan and Pokrov. These celebrations involve specific rituals, including the use of ‘slavski kolač’ (ritual bread) and ‘žito’ (wheat), and are categorized by dietary restrictions into ‘mrsna’ (rich) or ‘posna’ (fasting) feasts.
