Orthodox Church saint commemorations

Overview

The Orthodox Church observes various feast days and commemorations of saints during August.

On August 8, the name day of Saint Miron the Wonder-worker, bishop of Crete, is celebrated. This observance includes prayers and charitable acts, particularly in Bulgaria. The day also commemorates Saint Emilian, a 9th-century bishop.

On August 17, the Church honors several figures, including Saint Myron, a priest martyred around 250 AD during the reign of Emperor Decius. Tradition states that Myron, who dedicated his life to the poor, widows, and orphans, was beheaded after refusing to renounce his faith despite threats from the governor of Achaia, Antipater. The feast day also commemorates the martyrs Straton, Philip, Eutychianos, and Cyprianos, residents of Nicomedia who were arrested after preaching in the city’s amphitheater. Additionally, the Church honors Saint Leucius and Saint Demetrios, an 18th-century neo-martyr from Samarina who faced martyrdom under Ottoman rule.

On August 18, the Church honors Saints Floros and Lavros, twin brothers and stonemasons from Byzantium. While working in Illyria, they used their skills to spread the Gospel. Following the healing of a priest’s son’s eye through prayer, they were arrested and martyred by being thrown into a well. The Church also commemorates Saint Arsenios of Paros on this day, an ascetic monk from the Cyclades, and marks the commemoration of the relocation of the holy relics of Saint Arsenios.
