Osaka Metro, KDDI, and AVITA have launched a demonstration experiment involving humanoid robots equipped with Google’s Gemini generative AI to provide station guidance. The humanoid robot, named ‘Hinata’, stands 178cm tall and is designed based on models by Professor Hiroshi Ishiguro. Wearing Osaka Metro uniforms, the robot provides information regarding station layouts, transfers, and local tourism in 60 different languages. The technology allows for real-time, low-latency dialogue by detecting nuances such as voice tone, speed, and inflection. Additionally, the robots feature built-in displays with QR codes that passengers can scan to receive detailed route maps on their smartphones.
By utilizing a human-like figure rather than a traditional screen-based avatar, the project aims to improve engagement, particularly with elderly passengers. The experiment seeks to evaluate user demand, social acceptance, and operational challenges. The stated goal is not to replace human staff but to automate repetitive inquiries, allowing human employees to focus on high-judgment tasks such as safety management and emergency response.
