Osaka Metro, KDDI, and AVITA have announced launched a demonstration experiment involving humanoid robots equipped with Google’s Gemini generative AI to provide station guidance. Scheduled to run from August 31 to September 15, 2026, at Umeda and Tanimachi Kyuchome stations, the trial aims to test the practical application of physical AI in addressing labor shortages caused by an aging population. The humanoids, humanoid robot, named ‘Hinata’, stands 178cm tall and is designed based on models by Professor Hiroshi Ishiguro, will wear Ishiguro. The experiment seeks to evaluate user demand, social acceptance, and operational challenges. The stated goal is not to replace human staff but to automate repetitive inquiries, allowing human employees to focus on high-judgment tasks such as safety management and emergency response.
