Osakidetza healthcare workers strike in Spain

Overview

Labor unions, including LAB, SATSE, ELA, CCOO, and UGT, announced a series of five planned strikes for Osakidetza workers after concluding there was “no necessary progress” in negotiations with the Basque health service. The unions are demanding improved working conditions, salary increases, and measures to prevent privatization.

The first strike commenced on October 30. While government-mandated minimum services ensured that emergency departments, dialysis, oncology, intensive care, and maternity services remained operational, routine and scheduled activities were cancelled. In Gipuzkoa, several health centers and specific services at Hospital Donostia and Hospital Bidasoa were reported closed. Protests were held in Donostia, Bilbao, and Vitoria-Gasteiz. Unions criticized the high level of minimum services required, stating it limits the effectiveness of the right to strike.
