Osmaneli watermelon harvest in Turkey

Overview

In late July 2026, the Osmaneli district of Bilecik Province completed a pilot project under Turkey’s Good Agricultural Practices program. Ten growers harvested roughly 4.5 million kg of watermelons, and pre‑harvest pesticide testing returned clean results. The producers were awarded a GAP certificate, signalling compliance with sustainable, traceable production standards.

A few days later, the same harvest was moving to market. About 44,500 tonnes of the geographically‑protected Osmaneli watermelon were being shipped to major Turkish cities. However, prices fell sharply, dropping from 15 lira per unit at the start of the season to around 4 lira. The steep decline left some fruit unsold or redirected to juice processing, highlighting a market‑price challenge despite the earlier certification success.
