Ostbahn rail service disruptions in Austria

Overview

Rail services between Bratislava and Vienna experienced significant disruptions due to a power line failure on the Austrian Ostbahn network, specifically on the section between Gramatneusiedl and Bruck an der Leitha.

Initial reports indicated that Austrian Railways (ÖBB) implemented replacement bus services for regional connections. While long-distance Railjet and RegioJet services between Vienna and Budapest were expected to maintain schedules via special stops, regional Rex 6 trains were heavily affected.

Subsequent investigations identified the cause of the damage as an electrical short and cable fire near Götzendorf, reportedly triggered by a squirrel coming into contact with a 15-kV high-voltage line. While long-distance services continued to operate with unscheduled stops, Eurocity connections faced heavy impacts and several cancellations. Repairs were projected to continue through Wednesday, with full operations anticipated to resume on Thursday.
