Osun State 2026 governorship race intensifies

Entities: Bola Ahmed Tinubu · Asiwaju Bola Oyebamiji · Dapo Abiodun · Governor Ademola Adeleke · All Progressives Congress

Overview

In mid‑July 2026 APC candidate Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji launched his campaign, pledging inclusive governance, infrastructure upgrades, a 3.5 MW power partnership and a new market in Ile‑Ife, and calling for peaceful, issue‑based campaigning.

By early August the race heated up. At a Gbongan rally Oyebamiji criticised incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration for neglecting parts of the state, especially Ayedaade LGA, and for allegedly using state resources for family interests. The APC responded by forming a 100‑member Election Monitoring and Mobilisation Committee in the Osun West senatorial district and deploying roughly 15,000 police officers—including conventional units, the Police Mobile Force, dog handlers and medical staff—to guard polling stations. Police Commissioner Samuel Erale Etaifo warned that anyone arrested for electoral offences would be transferred to Abuja for prosecution.

On 4 August the EFCC froze the state government’s bank account. Governor Adeleke filed a federal suit, describing the freeze as a threat to democracy. APC leaders, including National Secretary Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Bashiru and Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who praised growing support across all 30 local government areas, reiterated confidence in Oyebamiji’s victory and urged the governor to cease personal attacks on President Bola Tinubu and focus on issue‑based campaigning. Campaign rhetoric contrasted the governor’s warning of a “half‑salary” era under the APC with the party’s call for issue‑focused policies.
