Ovarian cancer symptoms and diagnosis challenges
Overview
Ovarian cancer is characterized by symptoms that often mimic common, non-serious health issues, which can lead to delayed diagnoses. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) notes that early stages may involve few or no symptoms. When they do occur, indicators include abdominal swelling or pain, bloating, difficulty eating, rapid fullness, urgent urination, and constipation. A key warning sign is a persistent change in these symptoms rather than the symptoms themselves.
Medical experts, including Prof. Dr. Evrim Erdemoğlu of Memorial Antalya Hospital, have highlighted that because the disease is often asymptomatic in its early stages, approximately two-thirds of patients are diagnosed only after the cancer has spread within the abdomen. In Turkey, between 3,900 and 4,000 women are diagnosed annually.
Early detection can allow for positive results through closed surgical methods combined with heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). For those with a family history of the disease, genetic screening is a recommended consideration.
