Pachamama celebrations in the Andes

Communities across the Andean region marked the annual Day of Pachamanda on August 1 with traditional rituals honoring Mother Earth. In Argentina, municipal authorities in Catamarca and the capital organized public "corpachada" ceremonies, inviting residents to dig symbolic earth‑mouth holes and leave offerings of food, coca, and drink. The events highlighted the cultural importance of the celebration in provinces such as Jujuy, Salta and others.

A day later, similar observances were reported in Peru. Indigenous leaders in the Quebrada hosted a free Pacha Raymi ceremony, and the Pachar community in Ollantaytambo, Cusco, combined its anniversary with a large mural project documenting local history and rituals. Funded by cultural foundations, the murals covered hundreds of square metres and involved participants of all ages, reinforcing the link between the landscape and heritage.

Together, these reports show a coordinated, cross‑border renewal of Pachamama rites and related artistic initiatives, underscoring the shared cultural identity of Andean peoples in both Argentina and Peru.
