Pakistan cricket leadership and systemic decline

Former cricketers and coaches have raised concerns regarding the decline of Pakistan cricket, citing leadership failures and systemic structural issues.

Jason Gillespie and Azhar Ali criticized Aaqib Javed, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) director of high performance, for the current state of the sport. Gillespie described the situation as a ‘mess’ and suggested that PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi’s interference in selection matters hinders professional decision-making. Ali attributed recent poor performances, such as a 2-0 Test series defeat against England, to poor decision-making over the last three years and criticized Javed for shifting blame onto players.

Wasim Akram expanded on these concerns, stating that the systemic issues are too extensive for one individual to fix. He identified deficiencies in batting, bowling, and fielding, while noting that instability within the first-class domestic structure has contributed to the national team’s struggles. Akram emphasized that a broken domestic structure and a lack of continuity in first-class cricket have failed to produce a strong talent pipeline.

Following the team’s tour of England, Akram further criticized management for making ‘embarrassing’ mid-tour decisions. He specifically cited the removal of seven players and the dismissal of head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and assistant Umar Gul during the tour, stating that such sweeping changes indicate a significant lack of communication and stability within the team management.
