Pakistan disaster response and climate adaptation efforts
Overview
Pakistan is implementing technological and systemic improvements to address its high climate vulnerability and disaster response challenges.
To assist with rapid-onset disasters, the SafeAI platform was developed as an intelligent disaster-response assistant. Powered by Google Gemini technology, the tool provides a centralized hub for crisis information, including meteorological updates, a hospital finder using live data, and emergency directories. It also includes utilities such as live location sharing for rescuers and battery diagnostics.
In tandem with these technological tools, UNESCO has initiated a review of the country’s Flood Early Warning System (FEWS). This follows devastating monsoon seasons in 2022 and 2025, which revealed that despite improvements in hydro-meteorological monitoring, there was insufficient lead time for communities to respond to fast-onset floods. The review seeks to strengthen the warning chain by focusing on impact-based forecasting and community-level responses to hazards like flash floods and Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs).
