Pakistan International Airlines restructuring and expansion

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is undergoing a period of operational expansion and structural reform following a period of financial losses exceeding US$2.8 billion.

In terms of flight operations, the airline has regained 14 landing slots at London’s Heathrow Airport. This recovery allows for increased capacity under the winter schedule, including raising weekly services from Islamabad to London from three to five flights and increasing Lahore-to-London operations from one to two weekly flights.

Simultaneously, the airline is managing a major transition following a privatization process. Management control has transferred to a consortium led by Arif Habib Corporation, which has injected Rs80 billion (US$288 million) in fresh capital into the carrier. As part of its fleet expansion and aircraft acquisition plans, PIA has announced a recruitment drive for new cabin crew. While the airline undergoes these reforms, public debate has emerged regarding whether the debt restructuring and financial assistance provided to the national carrier constitute “special treatment” compared to other private businesses.
