Palestinian prisoner rights and human rights advocacy
Overview
International and local efforts have emerged to address the rights and treatment of Palestinian prisoners. At a United Nations Human Rights Council event in Geneva co-hosted by Palestine and Spain, officials raised alarms regarding detention conditions. Neil Tobin of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights described the situation of detainees as ‘horrific,’ while UN Special Rapporteur Paul Pérez-Salas noted documented evidence of torture and ill-treatment dating back to the 1970s.
In Spain, solidarity activities have continued to focus on these issues. In Madrid, organizations scheduled a talk featuring released Palestinian prisoners Nader Sadaqa and Jaser al-Barghuthi, who were to share their experiences of captivity and release through prisoner exchanges. Additionally, activist Manuel García Morales scheduled a book presentation in Torrejón de Ardoz regarding the Global Sumud Flotilla, an international mission that attempted to deliver aid to Gaza before being intercepted by Israel.
