Palio di Asti Savoy invitation controversy

Overview

A controversy emerged regarding the invitation of Prince Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy to the Palio di Asti as a guest of the Rione Santa Caterina neighborhood. The National Association of Italian Partisans (ANPI) and several local organizations, including labor unions and the Five Star Movement, opposed the invitation. They argued that hosting a descendant of the Savoy dynasty was “incompatible with the republican values of the city,” particularly given the dynasty’s historical role in the rise of fascism and the 1938 racial laws.

In response to criticisms, Italian MP Marcello Coppo defended the event, stating the race is “a festival that touches the soul of the city” and that politics should remain separate from the local celebration.

Despite the opposition, Prince Emanuele Filiberto proceeded with a scheduled visit on September 5 and 6. His itinerary included meeting with local authorities, attending parades and rehearsals, visiting the Palio Museum, and participating in religious ceremonies. It was noted that while he would observe the historical parade, he would not march in the procession.
