Panasonic Energy battery technology and market expansion

Overview

Panasonic Energy is expanding its lithium-ion battery operations with a focus on integrated energy solutions for AI data centers and electric vehicles. The company has set a strategic goal to reach 1 trillion yen in data center energy storage sales by fiscal year 2028, roughly tripling its current sales. To achieve this, Panasonic Energy plans to invest 350 billion yen between fiscal 2026 and 2028 to develop next-generation technologies and build a North American supply chain, including production in Kansas and Mexico.

To support these technological advancements, the company has launched Energy Innovation Square in Kadoma, Osaka Prefecture. This new global research and development hub consolidates material research, cell design, and prototyping into a single location. Working in conjunction with the Suminoe Production Development Facility in Osaka, the hub aims to accelerate the development and mass production of next-generation batteries for the automotive and data center sectors.

The specialized battery development operation, employing approximately 800 people across the Kadoma and Suminoe sites, intends to double its development efficiency by fiscal year 2031 compared to 2024 levels. Technologies and manufacturing processes developed at these Japanese sites will be implemented across Panasonic Energy’s global network, including existing plants in Japan and the United States in Nevada and Kansas.
