Paragliding tourism in Fethiye, Turkey

Overview

Fethiye, located in Turkey’s Muğla province, has been identified as a significant hub for multi-activity sports tourism, with paragliding from Babadağ Mountain serving as a central attraction. Research indicates a growing traveler interest in combining adventurous physical experiences with traditional sightseeing.

On August 26, a fatal paragliding accident occurred on Babadağ during a tandem flight. Pilot Ali Kıdıl and Chinese tourist Xiangrui Meng crashed into a steep, rocky area shortly after taking off from an altitude of approximately 1,900 meters. The paraglider reportedly lost control for unknown reasons.

Following a 10-hour search and rescue operation involving the Gendarmerie Search and Rescue (JAK) and UMKE, the bodies of both individuals were recovered via helicopter and transported to the Fethiye State Hospital morgue. The Chinese Embassy in Turkey has confirmed the identity of the deceased tourist and is providing consular assistance to the family. Local authorities are currently investigating the exact cause of the crash.
