Following the shooting death of 22-year-old Deisy Paola Giménez Segovia in Lambaré, authorities arrested Aldo Alexis Duarte Moreira, her suspected killer. Duarte, 26, was apprehended in a wooded area in Villeta on the night of Friday, October 9, after a police search. The victim was shot twice in the head on the night of Thursday, October 8, while walking toward her workplace in the Santa Lucía neighborhood. During his arrest, Duarte reportedly claimed he acted in an ‘outburst of anger.’ While appearing before the Public Ministry, Duarte exercised his constitutional right to remain silent. Prosecutor Amelia Bernal Jara has formally charged him with femicide and willful homicide, and authorities have requested homicide. A judge has since ordered preventive detention as for Duarte Moreira, who will be held at the Centro Nacional de Prevenidos while the investigation continues through the San Lorenzo Permanent Attention Court. Investigators have seized a mobile phone and other items to assist in the ongoing probe. An autopsy confirmed the cause of death as two gunshot wounds to the skull that affected the brain tissue and brainstem. The case has prompted the Defensoría del Pueblo to call for an investigation into potential failures or omissions by authorities, noting that Giménez had previously filed reports of violence and was under a judicial restraining order at the time of her death. The Defensoría has specifically called for an exhaustive investigation into whether existing protection mechanisms were effectively applied and supervised. The murder has triggered protests in Asunción, organized by groups such as Articulación Feminista del Paraguay - 25NPy. Demonstrators gathered at the Plaza de la Democracia 25NPy, to demand justice, using slogans like ‘Vivas nos queremos’ to justice and criticize systemic machismo and the state’s perceived failure to prevent gender-based violence. machismo.
