Paraguay mass marriage initiative

Overview

Paraguay is conducting the second edition of the ‘Paraguay se casa’ (Paraguay gets married) campaign, an initiative designed to formalize unions for couples currently living in concubinage. The program aims to provide legal security by offering free civil marriage services, including the waiver of fees and certificates, to remove economic and administrative barriers.

The campaign targets various demographics, including new couples and those who have lived together for 20 or 30 years. While a central ceremony is scheduled for November 15 in Asunción, regional efforts are also underway, such as in the Itapúa department where applications are being accepted through late October.

Organizers, including the Registro del Estado Civil, intend to establish these free ceremonies as a national tradition. This follows a previous year in which the institution successfully formalized the unions of more than 3,500 couples.
