Paramount Pictures has acquired the film rights to Pierce Brown’s science fiction novel, ‘Red Rising’, for a cinematic adaptation. The project, which was previously being developed as a television series, will focus on the first book in the series. The story follows Darrow, a miner on Mars living within a rigid, color-coded caste system, who attempts to infiltrate the elite ‘Gold’ class to dismantle the social hierarchy. Francis Lawrence, known for directing ‘The Hunger Games’ franchise, has been hired to direct and produce the film alongside Cameron MacConomy and Francesco Goedhuis. Justin Rhodes is tasked with writing the screenplay. Author Pierce Brown will serve as an executive producer. No official release date has been announced. Director Francis Lawrence recently revealed that the project had been stalled for eight years. It was originally intended to be a series at Netflix, with two pilots already written, but frequent leadership changes and shifting content priorities at the streaming platform prevented progress. Following the reversion of rights to Pierce Brown, the project transitioned to Paramount. Lawrence has expressed a preference for a theatrical release rather than a streaming-only model.
