Paraná River flooding in Paraguay and Argentina

Overview

Rising water levels in the Paraná River have triggered hydrological alerts in Paraguay and Argentina. To manage excess water, the Yacyretá Binational Entity opened its floodgates as levels approached critical thresholds. In Paraguay, monitoring by Itaipú Binacional indicated that rising river levels were causing backwater effects in the Acaraymí stream, threatening local residences.

As the situation progressed, intense rainfall and El Niño conditions necessitated further water management actions. The Yacyretá Binational Entity opened its main spillway gates to mitigate rising levels, resulting in high water in Ayolas, Paraguay, and Ituzaingó, Argentina. These hydrological shifts led to the preventive closure of the Ituzaingó-Ayolas international crossing and the suspension of tourism at the Iguazú Falls.
