Overview

Research published in late July 2026 from Brazil showed that fathers who ate large amounts of ultra‑processed foods before conception had newborns with higher birth weight and greater thigh and suprailiac fat, suggesting paternal diet can influence fetal growth through inflammation and epigenetic changes.

A few days later, studies from the United States and Denmark expanded the focus to maternal nutrition. An American cohort linked higher maternal consumption of ultra‑processed foods to increased placental exposure to phthalates, chemicals associated with low birth weight, preterm delivery and neurodevelopmental disorders. A Danish randomized trial found that children of obese mothers who followed a high‑protein, low‑glycaemic index diet during pregnancy had higher total and LDL cholesterol at nine years old compared with those whose mothers ate a moderate‑protein, moderate‑glycaemic diet.

Together, the findings broaden the understanding of how both paternal and maternal dietary patterns before and during pregnancy can shape early growth and long‑term cardiometabolic risk in offspring.
